The Iowa State University press release states Dr. Wilmarth is taking the family and consumer sciences field by storm. An assistant professor in consumer sciences at the University of Alabama since 2013, Wilmarth has juggled numerous academic committees, chaired two search committees, and played multiple research journal reviewer roles, in addition to her teaching and research responsibilities.
As one nominator put it, “Dr. Melissa Wilmarth has a significant and remarkable record of achievement as a young professional. Her record is one that older professionals would be proud to have achieved.”
In this early stage of her career, she has already published nine journal articles and a book chapter, and she has several manuscripts in review. She has also given more than 30 conference presentations. It is no wonder she received the Emerging Scholar Award and two best paper awards from the Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal.
Wilmarth’s deeply ingrained passion to create a positive future for her profession began at Iowa State when she attended the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Future Search Summit and became the student representative on the board of directors. Since then she has been heavily involved in six family and consumer sciences associations, with notable roles such as vice president of operations and professional development co-chair.
One nominator wrote, “Melissa became a leader as an undergraduate and has continued the ethic of service as her career has developed. These early career achievements demonstrate a continuous level of excellence that should make her alma mater very proud now and in the future.”
Congratulations Dr. Wilmarth!
