HES graduate assistant Brooke Courtney spent a recent morning sharing tips and strategies for financial wellness in college and beyond with a class of freshman and transfer students in the School of Social Work.
Her presentation titled Your Future Begins Today emphasized money management strategies for college students but pointed out that it is never too early to start planning for the big things in life like a home purchase or retirement.
Brooke offered advice on ways to manage money while in school which included setting alerts on bank accounts, pooling resources with roommates for things like grocery staples, cooking more and eating out less, and learning to live on a budget. She encouraged students to maintain an emergency fund for unexpected expenses like car repairs. Then, Brooke led students in a discussion where they shared successful money management strategies of their own.
Her talk also conveyed the importance of creating long-term financial goals, establishing credit, and developing good budgeting, saving and investing habits that offer life-long benefits.
Brooke, a Tucson, Ariz. native, is a student in the Accelerated Master’s Program. She will receive her Bachelor’s in Consumer Affairs this December and her Master’s in Family Financial Planning and Counseling in May 2019. Brooke currently serves as president of the HES Ambassadors.
